OMG!! are these yours? I've played very very very similar game ideas over the many years I've been playing rpg's (30+ years)

To start, hey dirk, I guess not everyone is as smart as you then. good thing, because the human race would become extinct! With that taken care of, I find these encounter seeds somewhat useful, thnx for posting them alex.

i agree with dirk, but thought they was better than 1 star... i understand that new ideas are hard to find due to how long d&d has been out.....

Actually Dirk hit it right on the head. Yes these may be good ideas, but over the years they have been used and used again. Of course ideas are hard to come by after an rpg has been out as long as D&D has been, but c'mon, why did you include the tired idea of a plant that gives off "smoke" that gets you high.. geez, I think they call that marijuana (which has no place in any rpg imho)

As the author of these ideas, having read the feedback I feel a little surprised that they were received quite so badly. Apologies if you had come up with similar themes yourselves (does that make them bad?). To put a little background to the submission – every now and then I spend an hour or so coming up with a few random encounters to flesh out the next few sessions. This is the result of such an exercise – and it pays dividends to do this yourself with ideas that appeal to you, simply to add a little diversity to the flow of exploration and combat. That said I am a little mystified that readers can’t find ANYTHING here of value. I know my players greatly enjoyed voting in the beauty competition, found Hogarth Dragonsbane very amusing, and were fascinated by the monks who shared a mutual Gnostic experience. Ah well – horses for courses! You may now continue to shoot me down! (Note: scoring 3 as that is average as stands).

I would have given it more than 1 star, but since the author feels that he or she needs to defend himself/herself, well that just turned me off and I deleted it.

Surely the "extra" 31st encounter is an honest enough appraisal of these adventure seeds without any additional carping by unimpressed readers? OK, some of the ideas are slight...e.g. the busy market ?! But others could be a full gaming session with a bit of fleshing out..e.g. the plant filled passage could lead to an inter-party hack up, beloved of so many underprepared, overworked DMs !

I would have given it 5 stars, but then I read the idea about a plant that makes you high... one thing - D&D and Other RPG's Have Taken Hits About Being A Game That Promotes Violence & Drug Abuse - According To This Submission, Well Maybe You Like Playing A Game With "Marijuana" As Part Of It, But For Us Who Keep Trying To Break Away From That Attitude,
We Keep Finding Assholes & Potheads Who Keep Dragging The Rest Of Us Back Down! GROW UP!!!

Actually my sins are far worse than you think, Xena. I actually ran a whole campaign around the theme of a drug triad and it's impact on the community. Shocking stuff eh? I really don't mean to make you look stupid, but my source material for this was of course Sword & Sorcery's D20 information about the various 'Lotus Flowers' and their range of effects on the imbiber (see Creature Collection page 124). Go check it out. And Black Isle Studios who used Black Lotus in the game 'Baldur's Gate'. I'm sure you'll want to go crying to them as well.

except for the author supporting drug use in his game, this is alright

Some ideas are old and played out, some ideas I will use, BUT I do not like the idea based on drug or drug-like plants being used ... kind of insults us good folks who have no trouble living a drug-free life.

Some amusing idea's here that could come in hand next time i have one of my mental blanks.
some of these people need to lightn up

posted by Mike-O on 2004-08-25 21:26:39
I really agree with "Bob." lightening up would be a great idea for those posters with styx up their butts, but the ideas were a little thin. However, these are all great SEEDS. Several of them havebeen planted in my DM brain, and are filling themselves out nicely. good work.

Drugs are waaaaay cooooool! Legalize drugs and the whole world will be happy to say High! D&D without drugs is like sex without a partner, just not worth the energy!! SMOKE DOPE, SHOOT DOPE, ENJOY THE BUZZ!!

Ok i very rarely comment but as a roleplayer for 20 years and a archaeologist by trade i am mistified by some of the comments. 1)Although d&d was one of the first to truely introduce us to roleplay it has since become nothing less then a money making franchise with a sterotypical fantasy view and little imagination 2)People say everything promotes violence and drugs from films to books eg Harry Potter and witchcraft!!, people have the right to make up there own minds 3)Drugs have always been a very important part of mordern day the historic past as well as literature, read Robin Hobb or J.R.R Tolkein. So i surgest you rate this on its content, which is useful rather then good, especially for newer roleplayers and not rate it on your own moral objections.

In all my ranting i forgot to rate it, 7 for some old some new but an excellent collection overall.

EVERYBODY MUST GET STONED!! If it wasn't for the huge drug use in this submission, this would be a work of shit, so light up and be happy everybody!!

posted by Mary Jane on 2004-09-29 17:04:18
If you got any more drug related adventures - PLEASE SUBMIT THEM ALL!! I would have never started palying D&D if smoking a dank spliff wasn't a major part of the whole mind's eye experience

posted by Jantiva on 2004-10-03 19:40:21
Fuck Yeah!! Legalize Drugs!! Send Me Some Of That Good Fucking Shit!!

posted by Hacken' Goblins For Fun & Profit on 2004-10-06 15:16:11
"Hack - Slash - Toke" is the only way to game... This is one way cool, spliff smokin', acid driopping set of adventure ideas... LIGHT UP EVERYBODY!!

posted by High Times on 2004-10-16 12:41:01
Fuck Yeah!! To hell with the assholes who don't get high. D&D and Dank go hand in hand

posted by Sam Shpiz on 2004-10-31 03:10:05
very useful stuff. a few things id like to say: the folks who hated this little peice for having used dope are a bit exaggerating. theres nothing that wrong with drugs and the guys who smoke them. i do however agree that drugs shouldnt be made a part of roleplaying. because my players have a hard time playing stoned and the food keeps running out and no one wants to go to the kitchen. if youre players are okay with that however thats good clean fun for all. or if you play in the kitchen...
overall it had a few nice ideas though and a few used ones.

Now, I'm not sure that these sound like epic level hooks. An ogre covered in sovereign glue? Child gladiators? That aside, they are excellent seeds. Some a bit mundane, like a busy market. But others are original, or atleast interesting. The ogre is definitly my favorite, though I see a lot of these more suitable for chracters of 8-12th lvl, rather than full blown epics. After all, if you've slain several dragons, a rogue in the stocks may be a bit dull. Good work though. I took away a few from this. Thanks.

Man. I'm amazed how hostile people were to a guy giving out free ideas. To those who lead a drug free life and were offended: 1) he didn't say the players had to smoke it or anything... it sounded more like a trap. 2) you act like if you do something in D&D you have to do it in real life as well... now who needs to grow up... Im sure you go around hacking people up with swords on the weekend... thanks for the effort.

A good bunch of idea's

A) I never knew D&D had such a following of potheads! lol Whatever floats your boat guys! (just watch for that DEA agent peeking through your window...) B) Alex got way over-flamed, heck 90% of the content was clean, and free, ideas. Lighten up peeps. B) I gave it a 7 for effort and creativity - I dare any one of the flamers to sit down and come up with 31 "Encounter Seeds".
