possibly good short story ideas, but not good adventure ideas.

I was skeptical about this at first. But I tried it, using your first option as a base, and it proved to be a different sort of experience. The remaining investigators managed to pump information out of the shopkeeper, after which they used an already standing gate to Carcosa (from a previous adventure) to intercept the Byakhee and save the day. They later researched a ritual to remove the ring. The ritual itself was not pretty, and they had to fend of random Byakhee attacks between research sessions.

Seriously people, just use your imagination. That's why these are so vague; it's really your own fault if you cannot use this to some extent.
