GWENISH CHURCH HISTORY records that in 54 AGE the kingdom's first Chosen, Veritia I, consecrated a finely crafterd longsword as a gift to Gwenil's famously devout king, Rowan I. It was called the Sword of Counsel, in recognition of King Rowan's establishment of the Aunuvian Council, the thirteen bishoprics, and other central institutions of the Church of Aunu. The sword's qualities are said to have included the power to counsel (advise) its weilder: it grew suddenly cold when danger was near, pointed the way to safety, and communicated in other non-verbal ways.

The sword remained in the Royal Family's possession for exactly 200 years. Then, in 254 AGE, King Cyril II lost the sword while bravely struggling to save Agathian townspeople trapped in the floodwaters of the River Fyff (see History: Cyril II). Tidewaters pulled the sword from the king's belt. Confronted with the choice of retrieving it or saving his drowning subjects, Cyril let the sword go.

Rumours circulating in Agata's black market have it that Trade Lands fisherman found the sword in their fishing nets a few weeks ago. They were fishing--contrary to Gwenish law--in the waters off Cranoc Cliffs (just east of Cranoc). Not long after discovering the sword, they lost it again when their ship was attacked by a huge whale. The Trade Landers believe the whale swallowed the sword, and they are now scouring Gwenil's southern coast hunting him.

If the Trade Landers retrieve the sword, it will pass into Terrathetian hands and may be lost to Gwenil forever. The aim of this adventure is to recover the Sword of Counsel before the Trade Landers do, and return it to the king--for a handsome reward, of course!

The Sword of Counsel is a superbly-crafted longsword with the following Weapon Characteristics: +4 Strike Modifier / +2 Parry Modifier / +2 Disarm Modifier / 0 Timing Modifier / -1 WIP / 0 Armour Penalty. It is also said to possess the power of counsel, as described above. It is unclear whether the sword will counsel any weilder, or only a restricted class of weilders (such as, 'Kings of Gwenil' or 'Faithful Gwens').
